Actor Manisha Koirala, while talking about her Bollywood journey with filmmaker Imtiaz Ali, spoke about why she preferred to play a deglam role in Dear Maya Upcoming Movie.
An effervescent Manisha Koirala and a curious Imtiaz Ali sat down to talk about the actor and his trip in films and beyond, before the release of his upcoming film, Dear Maya. With takeaways like how Mani Ratnam trapped her every time she tried to put makeup on while shooting for Bombay and why Shah Rukh Khan (her co-star in Dil Se) felt the need to advise her, this free-wheeling talk received by Imtiaz It was both funny and insightful.
In Dear Maya, which marks the debut as director of one of Imtiaz’s former assistant directors, Sunaina Bhatnagar, Manisha plays a middle-aged recluse, who refrains from leaving her house until she receives a love letter. Manisha has been receiving praise for her real lonely, desolate appearance. When Imtiaz mentioned it, the actor said he chose not to do makeup because she felt it was the right way to make the character. “I loved the script and I just wanted to do it well. I thought that would be Maya Devi.” From here, the filmmaker took Manisha almost 20 years ago when she, probably the first actor, ran out of make-up on the screen. He was Bombay by Mani Ratnam (1995). In fact, Manisha came to be known for opting for a natural look in films – Dil Se and Mann, were among the examples.
The actor, however, revealed that the first time he had to give up vanity was not a pleasant experience. “I had a hard time accepting it.When I was doing Bombay, I tried to put on the makeup, but Mani used to pick me up right there.I used to do that while the shot was getting ready. But I used to be trapped. In Dil Se too, without makeup. ”
Dil It was Manisha’s second collaboration with Mani, and the director was blamed for the best of it. Speaking of Mani, Manisha admitted that she was among the filmmakers who got her out of the complacency she had brought into her professional life. “Whenever I got a job with Mr. Mani or a good director, I put my 100 percent, but I was making movies after movies, so I developed a little complacent attitude.” Curiously, it was this chance that made Shah Rukh extremely protective towards her.
When Imtiaz asked him what the superstar was like two decades ago, Manisha remembered the times when Shah Rukh felt he needed his advice. “He has been the same, except the fact that with Mr. Mani, everyone gets quite (respectful), addressing him with ‘Lord.’ Shah Rukh is full of energy and enthusiasm. It was an absolute pleasure. He used to be very protective and advised me a lot.He probably felt, “she is not doing well.” It was too casual.I did not care much.
After ruling Hindi films in the 1990s, Manisha developed an on-and-off association with Bollywood in the 2000s. From the work he did in recent years, only a film like The Company and Lajja gained a memory value. His last film was Chehere: A Modern Day Classic (2015), which was of no use to him. Now that she returns with Coming Soon Film Dear Maya, Manisha is very excited to be a part of Hindi cinema. In fact, she believes that the current phase of Bollywood is more convenient for her than she reigned. “But as much as she’d like to do more work now, she also feels that the current scenario is a bit tough for her.” I love this phase … I love the movies that are made today. The actors and there are great expectations of them.
Things have changed a lot and for the better. Today there is a lot of professionalism. But the demands (of) the actors and actresses are also much now. To do what is right, to say the right thing, to be seen in the right place, all these things have become a responsibility. I feel in former times, people forgave. So, it was a bit easier (for us). But having said that, it may be that’s just why the type of movies you make now have better quality. In film, realism has taken up more space than melodrama. Some great artists (today) are very natural, organic instead of having melodramatic expressions, “said the actor.
